Simple question, but hard to answer in one paragraph.
Some photographers actually have taken college-level classes.

There are lots of books on photography. Check also the web or on-line articles by major camera manufacturers (Canon, HP, etc.). One thing is sure. Take LOTS of pictures and delete the bad one. Eventually you will know what works and what does not!
