Its easy..
At first there were only Catholics and some small heretical groups like the Gnostic's that pretty much faded away.
Then about 1000 years ago there was the Great Schism where the Orthodox and the Catholics split ways.
Then about 500 years ago there was the Protestant revolt, where the Protestants broke away from the Catholics and accused the Catholics of going astray.
The Protestants began in several branches, the Lutheran, the Presbyterian and the "radical". Then in England the King wanted a divorce and so he started the Anglican Church which became the Episcopal Church in the USA... The Anglican also split and split forming the Baptists, the Congregationalists, the Methodists, and ogthers.
Then about 100 years ago dispensationalism became popular and it started independent church movements and pentecostalism.

For St. Francis .
"The line of popes can be traced back, in unbroken succession, to Peter himself " Not quite .
First of all read the book "The Bad Popes" there were times of Two Popes , No Popes , Illegitimate Popes , and just plain ol' Bad Popes . Not to mention some evidence for Pope Joan the F to M transgender Pope .
Second the Orthodox Church claims their Popes since 1054 are the true sucessors of St. Peter .
Sdit for 3 : Apparently some Catholic gave us a thumbs down because we are presenting facts again . It is an excellent chart and explanation .

There are three branches of Christianity:
1 Catholic
2 Protestant (includes 1000's of sub-denominations)
3 Eastern Orthodox
If you are a Christian, you are one of those. People who think otherwise delude themselves (and they are probably protestants).
Every Christian church is an offshoot of the Catholic Church. The Eastern Orthodox churches broke away from unity with the pope in 1054. The Protestant churches broke away and were established during the protestant revolt, which began in 1517. Only the Catholic Church existed in the tenth century, in the fifth century, and in the first century, faithfully teaching the doctrines given by Christ to the apostles, omitting nothing. The line of popes can be traced back, in unbroken succession, to Peter himself (see list at: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12272b.htm ).
