To answer your question, yes, we are higher than you. These larger punishments exsist to deter violence against police, who are subject to more violence than you can imagine. Also, it is not a life sentence anywhere in the US, but its penalties are stiff.
It is also good to note that similar laws exsist to protect taxi drivers, bus drivers and so on; these people being PUBLIC servents that are prone to violence. It is a deterant, NOT saying they are better then you.

Yes but hopefully not a life sentence but the death penalty, at least in Va it's that way. As for your comment on "Are they higher than us? The reason it's such a big deal is because of what we "Police Officers" represent and that is the one in the middle of the kaos that is there to protect you the citizen and if a person has no qualms about killing a Police Officer what kind of animal do you think he will be to an average citizen. Also when someone kills a cop they are saying they don't have any respect for not just the Officer but mankind and the American society with a system of values and beliefs.

You may actually get the death penalty. Same as if you murdered anybody else. What the court will look at is how much of a threat to society you are. For example, if you kill a cop, a person who is doing his job and there to protect you, someone who you know who has the ability to protect himself and others, then can I trust you out with the rest of society? What would you do to a civillian who may not be so prepared to protect himself?
If a guy or gal is willing to put their life on the line for us, then we need protect them by making those who hurt or kill them suffer the FULL extent of the law, so others will see and maybe think twice, before they attack them.

It should. Police Officers risk their life every day to prevent crime and protect those in trouble. They have a much higher health/death risk rate than others. Also people may be more likely to shoot a cop if they know it’s the same penalties as doing it to anyone else.

It is written into law by many state's representatives...Colorado's has this to say:
"The general assembly recognizes that protection of peace officers and firefighters from crime is a major concern of our state because society depends on peace officers and firefighters for protection against crime and other dangers and because peace officers and firefighters are disproportionately damaged by crime because their duty to protect society often places them in dangerous circumstances. Society as a whole benefits from affording special protection to peace officers and firefighters because such protection deters crimes against them and allows them to better serve and protect our state. The general assembly therefore finds that the penalties for first degree murder of a peace officer or firefighter should be more severe than the penalty for first degree murder of other members of society."
Sums it up for me. Although you'll notice that it doesn't say anything about an automatic life sentence...mainly because this is a part of your question that is in error.

its is because they take an oath to protect and serve and you killing them just goes to show why we need cops. why does it matter to you if you kill anyone you will go to jail forever. and if it was up to me i would kill everyone that has killed someone else. none of this sitting on your *** in jail for 45 years, no you kill and you will be killed. if you are found guilty then death will be there waiting for you when you get back to your cell.

Actually - a lot of cop killers find themselves on Death Row.
So...no....not automatic life in prison ..... could end up with a needle in your arm.

Yeah and in states with the death penalty they almost always get the death penalty. I don't agree with it though. I think life in prison and the death penalty are both cruel and unusual punishment in all situations. I believe we should come up with other alternatives to jails and prisons.
