is it a felony or a misdemeanor when someone steals a prescription pad writes themself a prescription with a phony doctors name?
and BTW how does a person even get caught doing that? i mean it sounds like it would be hard to get caught. after all its just giving the pharmacist the note and they fill the bottle right?
and no i am not planning on doing this. its just a question out of curiosity

Depends on the state and what you were trying to acquire.
You can also be charged with fraud, forgery, burglary, and a slew of other offenses.
You could be caught if the pharmacist suspects anything fishy and decides to call in to the physician.

Writing a fake prescription involves a whole host of minor felonies - forgery, theft, impersonating a doctor, etc.
People get caught because they don't know how to fill out prescriptions properly and the pharmacist has to call the doctor's office for clarification.

It's a felony and believe me you will get caught. They do regular inventories on script pads, once found out they will red flag the doctor on an interstate FDA regulated central computer system. It's just a matter of time.
