Yes, that is an infection. You need to get the dog to the vet.
Added: It is not expensive at all. You need to have the vet check it out though to determine what kind of infection the dog has so he can predcribe the right meds, but the meds are pretty cheap.

My dog gets the same thing; she has very deep ear wells and the vet told me when I first got her at 5 weeks (she's 14 years old now) to keep her away from all types of seed like grass seed or anything because it could grow in her ears and cause problems.
She is a black lab/cocker spaniel mix and I have to regularly clean out her ears with a wash cloth and q-tips soaked in baby oil. This causes that black stuff to release and also lubricates the ear. The vet also gave me an ear wash that I have to use on her ears monthly.
She's funny because when I am using the q-tips in her ears, she does the "fast foot" thing that dogs do when you've hit "the spot" they like.
These procedures I do for her are all vet recommended; your pet may have a different situation going on so you definitely need to take it to the vet to get it checked out. Hopefully it's nothing major.
Good luck.

it sounds like your dog has a yeast infection.he is probably a dog with long floppy ears like mine.he had the same thing it is not that expensive but it is important to take care of your dog.take him to the vet .the vet will clean his ears inside out and put medicine in each ear and will show you how to do this at home.he will give you an antibiotic for the dog and you must use it as instructed and then once every week or two you must clean the ears with a solution the vet will sell you at the same time.i am not sure what all that cost cause when i took my dog to the vet he had his three year rabies shot too for a total of $63.00 here in Michigan.it will not go away so go see your vet and good luck.

You should take him to the vet...my dog had something like that a few weeks ago in his ears and the vet said it was an ear infection. Our vet prescribed medicine, which helped a lot...then we cleaned out our dog's ears each night with special doggy ear wipes. His ears got better in about a week. Hope you dog feels better and hope this helps!!

Alot of times black crusty is ears mites. If you are smelling an odor that could also mean an infection, one or the other or both. I would go to the vets to find out, it's an easy inexpensive fix and your dog will thank you!

I would say that your dog has earmites. And with your dog scratching, he may have infected his ears. I would call the vet and get some ear wash solution and the vet may give you a cream to clear up any infection.
Good Luck with your dog.

to the vet! it could be a bacterial infection, a fungal infection and/or ear mites. Any combo of these, also.
only a vet can tell and only a vet can prescribe the correct meds for the condition.
good luck to you and your doggie.

Sounds like your dog has ear mites and possibly a fungal infection on top of the mites. Your dog needs to see a vet,ASAP he needs to be on ear medication.

It sounds like either an ear infection or ear mites. It is hard to say how to treat it without knowing which it is, you definately need to get it treated, because either one is unhealthy and painful for the dog.
