Well... look around you at the world.
The Mayans have 2012 as the ending of their calendar.
The Chinese have 2012 in their prophecy stories.
The Native American Indians have 2012 in their stories.
And this list just keeps going... some 40 cultures world wide all have the year 2012 in their stories, legends and myths.
So.. as a rational human, we should really pay attention to this. Now many think it means the end, destruction, the world blows up or something.
But science tells us that in 2012 our system will line up with the center of our galaxy. Since none of us have been alive to see this happen, we actually have no clue as to what will happen.
We might be blown up by gravity, we might wobble and flip over (now flips are proven in rocks and magnetic levels) or the earth could be slammed with a proton blast so powerful it just microwaves everything on earth within a few seconds.
We as man just have no clue... a million guesses.. but no factual proof.
Some say this is when our 12th planet comes back through our system, Nibiru. Which is the cause of us flipping over.
Whatever it is... all cultures have a simple word to define this date... " change ". Change can be good or bad.

The bulk of the current events discussing 2012 is the Mayan calendar and that the world will end in 2012. The main problem that I see is the Mayans were neither Greek nor Roman and the calendar that we use today is the Gregorian calendar which is based on the Greco-Roman calendar. They (the Mayans) didn't use the exact same date (the time of the birth of Christ) as the Romans did for the year 1. The Mayans were destroyed centuries before the Spanish came to the Americas.
Different cultures have differing calendars. According to the Jewish calendar we are over the year 6000. (I'm not real sure the exact year)
The Chinese calendar is also well above the year 2007.
The problem is people are using an ancient calendar system and trying to convert it to the Gregorian calendar system and say, "See this proves the world will end at such and such time."
It is not our job to figure out when the world will end, but to be prepared and to prepare others for the time that it will end.

Supposedly it represents the end of the Mayan calendar, or a prediction by Nostradamus, or something equally as valid, like a prediction from a fortune cookie.

According to the Mayan calender, this is when the calender ends.
The markings in the Mayan calender has always predicted a disaster or major earth event.

That is when the Mayan Calender ends. If it ends then it ends but do you think the Mayans were right? I don't think they could fathom the world being the way it is today.

It is how people hundreds or thousands of years ago made multiple prophecys about it. I don't put any credit in it but I do find it kind of creepy because people from different cultures, societys, centuries, and different sides of the world came up with it.

it's nonsense
the ancient Mayan calendar "ends" in 2012*
big deal. ours ends every year on Dec 31, and the world hasn't ended yet
* what does that mean? well, i asked a Mayan, and he said "Time to get a new calendar."

Exactly that, non-sense. Some old Mayan calendar only goes to to 2012, so some whacko's are interpret ting that to mean something it doesn't.
