This is why it is a good idea to use salt w/ iodine.
Iodine is essential for life. It enables the thyroid gland to produce the hormones needed to develop and maintain the brain and nervous system. When the levels of thyroid hormone fall, the heart, liver, kidneys, muscles, and endocrine system are all adversely affected. It results in mental and physical retardation, goiters, cretinism, reproductive failure, infant mortality, and socioeconomic stagnation.

RE:
iodized salt or plain salt?
What's the difference? I know that iodized has iodine, but why do we need or not need that?

In the United States, salt producers cooperated with public health authorities and made both iodized and plain salt available to consumers at the same cost. Newspapers urged people to use iodized salt for the prevention of iodine deficiency.....

The body uses iodine for one purpose, to make thyroxine,
a substance manufactured by the thyroid gland in the lower
neck. It regulates metabolism in the cells, and we only need
a very small amount of iodine, about a milligram per year.
Most foods other than sea foods contain little or no iodine, so
adding a small amount of potassium iodide to table salt
to make it "iodized" gives us the small amount of iodine
we normally need. It doesn't come as elementary iodine,
but rather as the iodide ion.

Not a professional opinion, but, from what I understand, salt is salt, whether it's dug out of the ground or processed from sea water. "Specially for the idiotically inflated price stores ask for "Sea Salt"!

I don't know why, but we need it. If you're salting you might as well get the only nutritional benefit by using iodized.
