Chihuahua`s are usually less tolerant of small children and annoying teenage boys.
Pitbulls are great with kids, but being a responsible Pitbull owner is important too.
I wouldn`t let a child walk the Pitbull alone, because unless it`s been socialized with other dogs your dog may just decide to go for a dog in the street and your child wouldn`t have the strength to control a Pit.
Out of all 3 of my dogs, my Pitbull is the most obedient.

Both will be fine with good owners, and terrible with bad ones.
But a badly treated pit can do more damage that a badly treated chihuahua. A pit could kill a child whereas a chihuahua probably could only get a limb off due to the difference in size and accessibility.
However if the pit understands that the child is above him in the family order then he will be a great protector of the kids.

I have two pits that are wonderful with children. (They don't like other animals). Any dog that is around children need to be tolerant to being touch and played with. I don't have much experience with a chihuahua but have heard that they were not the best dogs around young children.

I wouldn't recomend either, but bottom line it would depend on how each dog was raised. If starting out with puppies as crazy as it may sound I would have to say the pit bull, because despite their reputation, when raised right they are great, playful, loyal dogs. Chihuahuas (although they can be great little companions) tend to be more timid and snippy because of their size.

All dogs can do wonderfully with kids, but I personally think that larger dogs are better if you have children because small dogs can easily be injured by kids playing and that can cause a dog to act defensively. Rough kids can be really scary to small dogs, so I think that a larger dog is the way to go.
It is still important though to teach kids the proper way to treat the dog and always supervise.

Ive read chihuahuas are not recommended for a family with small children, this because they are very fragile, and can not stand upto childrens rough behaviours. I know MANY MANY MANY Pitbulls, and pitbull type breeds. and i think they are wonderful family dogs..

Chihuahua is worse by a lot. Too small (fragile) and intolerant of rough handling. Pit bulls are great with kids!

I have both and small children. They are both great with kids if they come from good breeders and have good owners. If you get them when there are puppies you have a better chance of them being more tolerant with the child. good luck!!
