we just got our dog 4-5 days ago from a high kill shelter in delano. since then ive noticed the area around her vagina is baggy and her nipples are enlarged. she hasnt been eating her food and she is less independent. our other dog who is only 4 months plays with her, but im not sure she plays too. is being protective of her pouch? i want to kno how many she is, well the approx. what do i do? i dont know if ther any babies inside since ive felt her tummy. ive read that pregnant dog eat more, but mine doesnt. how can make her eat. i think she is also sick because she has developed a cough, like you would when you have phlegm in your throat. i really just want her to get better.

I would get to the vet. Some shelters are pretty lacking in medical care for their animals, especially high kill. She could be in heat if they did not spay, or she could be pregnant. This dog should be seen by a medical professional.

Hello:

As a breeder and show handler I would stronly suggest you take the poor dog to a vet. I have bred dogs for a long time and never saw a baggy vagina, the opening is called a vulva, her nipples could be enlarged because she is pregnant or she may have had puppies and is retaining milk. Get your vet to run an utra sound and they can tell if she is pregnant. A dog that is pregnant eats a lot as she is producing milk for the future litter. As for the cough it may be kennel cought, it sounds to me like the poor girl is in rough shape, please take her to a vet.

Best Wishes.

You don't say how old the dog is but she may be in season? that could explain the saggy pee and swollen nips, this also could explain the agressive behavior. I find it hard to believe that you would get an animal from a shelter that wasnt spayed? It's the law in most states to fix them before they are sent home. She should have been checked for health before leaving the shelter, why not call them and ask if her check was o.k. Again, I just think the animal is in or just coming out of season. But if in doubt take her to the vet.

you could try your dog on a raw meaty bone diet which is very healthy and natural and will help with her immune system.
coming from a shelter it would be likely she will have contracted kennel cough as this virus is rife in kennel situations in which case you will need to get some antibiotics from the vet and also you can get her abdomen checked she may have not long had puppies. if she wont eat try not to force the food in her face she will eat when hungary but check out a raw food diet, worked really well with my dog.

Alot shelter dogs tend to have kennel cough, it is like the flu, coughing, runny nose, and they tend to be lethargic. I would get her to a vet, it is no big deal if treated, but it could get worse, also it is contagious, so keep an eye on your other dog.

Seek professional help from a veterinary surgeon - quickly. Your dog sounds as though she is sick and requires attention. She may have kennel cough.

The only way to be certain is probably taking her to the vet. Just to protect your dog.
