Many reasons. Many believe because...
-they're weak of character.
-they're weak of mind.
-they inherited god as children and were brainwashed/conditioned to believe.
-they need the 'god' tool to function in a civilized society.
-they don't know any better.
-they're afraid of death (without life after).
-they can't face the reality of the death of themselves/others.
There are lots of reasons... too many to list.

People need to feel that there is an explanation for everything. Why is the sky blue? Where does thunder come from? What happens when we die?
Throughout history people have tried to answer these questions. Those who just make sh*t up and charge you for this wrong information we call them the clergy. Those who seriously look at the questions and try to answer them honestly (sometimes saying, "we don't know" when that is the case) we call scientists.

Believing that an invisible thing is watching you, listening to you, talking to you, influencing your life etc... are symptoms of schizoid delusional mental disorder. This disorder should not be encouraged or left untreated because sometime it can evolve in a full blown mental disease with dire consequences....

They need an explanation for the complexities of the Universe. And for security reasons, and perhaps even fear of death and loosing loved ones.
Personally, I view the Universe as an intelligent being in its own right that does not need to be worshiped and sung for in a church every Sunday (or Saturday, if you're a Seventh Day Adventist). And I'd think it'd be very foolish for one to believe our only purpose in life is to produced offspring and then cease to exist...

Every person's mind has a section marked "God". We fill that slot with whatever entity/symbol we choose. Christians fill it with
YHVH, Atheists with reason, pagans with nature, etc.

Originally, by example. Later, by presumption. Later, by direct experience of divine revelation.

I think a majority of people believe in God but most of them reject Him and are at enmity with Him.

because for a reasoning and thinking person there is no other plausible explaination for everything I see around me! watch kent hovind creation seminars on youtube if you're honestly searching for God! Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins, so you could go to heaven! simply believe and repent!
