I test out with an IQ around 140. A friend once said "xxx he's a know it all" and I said "but I talk about all sorts of things, am I a 'know it all' too". He replied "but you do know it all [not just shooting off mouth]".

It doesn't do me any good in life, though. All that horsepower and no transmission, can't get the rubber on the ground. Spend too much time thinking and not enough doing. And no common sense at all.

So IQ is probably a bad thing - 'when ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise'

A high score on a standardized IQ test has been shown to be only good as a predictor of success in school, if the person is able and willing to apply himself/herself. It does not accurately predict the development of common sense or future success in the real world, although it does measure a person's capacity for learning at a normal rate in a number of areas.

You stated it best. Just because you have a high IQ does not mean you can handle everyday stuff that requires common sense. I have seen a smart person (IQ) do some of the stupidest things and not think twice.

it depends on how you define intelligence. as you mentioned, IQ tests don't measure common sense or certain types of knowledge. also, IQ tests are recalibrated regularly to shove everyone into a bell curve. basically, a score of 100 is simply what the majority (or average) test-taker makes. so, if most people score a 70, they make that the new 100. these tests are often criticized for their accuracy and relevance. so, i'd have to say, IQ tests alone don't measure intelligence.

No. A high IQ only means they have an ABILITY to learn quickly, but if they do not expose themselves to the knowledge, they are no better off than anyone else.

IQ is supposed to be how well you adapt and can solve problems.

It reflects neither amount of knowledge nor common sense level

I'm going to quote David Spade in "Tommy Boy"

" There are two kinds of smarts. Book smart- which waved buy-buy to you long ago, and people smart- the ability to read people and see what they need..."

All I.Q. is a measure of is how quickly someone is able to learn a new concept. It doesn't measure how much they currently know, just their ability to learn.

I.Q. just says how much capacity or MB's your brain has. Doesnt really mean youre that smart. Use it or lose it.
