If you want extras, I would go with a minimum of 1 pound per person so at least 25 pounds of potatoes possibly 30 - and use Yukon Gold, they make the best tasting mashed potatoes.

Potatoes and mashed potatoes are two different things. You will need 1/2 pound of mashed potatoes per person. If people eat more than that than have a little more.

I would suggest buying 15 pounds of Yukon gold potatoes, especially if you want extra. Some people go for second and third helpings of mash and you'd rather have more than less. If you have much more left over, make potato cakes and serve with sour cream. Enjoy!

10 pounds of potatoes should feed 25 people easy. One pound mashed will feed 2 to 3 people.

Please do NOT count the potatoes in the bag or figure the amount needed by that UNLESS you are baking them. You will either end up with too much or not enough doing it that way when you are feeding that many. Potato sizes vary in a bag that's why using the weight is so much more accurate and actually less time consuming also.

Figure 1 medium potato, or about 1/2 lb., per person, plus a few extras. Yukon Golds make yummy mashed potatoes.

Since you say you want left overs I would say 2 potatoes per person. I always figure 1.5 per person when I don't want left overs and that always works out pretty close, sometimes depending on how many teens can run a little short, so I would definitely go with 2 per person.

If I was making for 25 people, I would probably estimate 1.5 potatoes per person (if they were all adults) or 1 per child.
