There is a stray cat that is killing all the birds. How can I make it go away?

Please ignore the suggestion to feed the cat - all that will do is keep it in the area. It will not prevent it from killing birds - cats do not kill birds in order to eat, they just kill them!

If I were you, I would call animal control and have them come and get the cat. If they will not do it, set some live traps and catch it yourself and take it to an animal shelter.

Cats are not a part of nature, and should not be allowed to kill native animals.

"Since 1967 the average population for the common birds in steepest decline has fallen 68 percent, from 17.6 million to 5.35 million. Some species have nose-dived as much as 80 percent and all 20 birds included in the Common Birds in Decline report have lost at least 50 percent of their population - in just four decades. " http://www.audubon.org/bird/stateofthebirds/

"Cats Are Not a Natural Part of Ecosystems...Cats Compete With Native Predators...Cats Transmit Disease to Wildlife...scientists estimate that nationwide, cats kill hundreds of millions of birds, and more than a billion
small mammals, such as rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks, each year..." http://www.abcbirds.org/cats/factsheets/predation.pdf

Bottom line - responsible cat owners keep their animals indoors. If the cat is allowed to roam, it will kill wildlife. It needs to be removed from the wild.

Okay, all the cruelty is not the right way to handle this situation. No pit bulls, no BB guns; no reason to harm that cat just for being a cat.

But, it has to go away.

So, you have 1 of 2 real options, here: First, you can call Animal Control. They will come get the cat, without using hurtful traps, pit bulls or BB guns to do it with, and take it to a shelter where it will be cared for and they will make every reasonable attempt to find it a home.

If there is a no-kill shelter in your area, then you could try to capture the cat and take it to them, as well.

I don't think you'll be very successful at that second option, though. Cats are smart and not very easy to catch.

Get a live trap. Put food in it and then take it to a farm family. If it is one stray they will bring more. If it is a female you are in trouble to have more little bird killers. If it is a male, he may spray everything that you have and then you will have smelly things.
The other suggestion I have is to get ahold of the local vets or humane societies, ask if they have a program to where they can get you a discount on vet services and get it fixed. You can keep it as an outdoor pet. However, don't forget to feed it so it won't go after the birds. Most males will chase off other cats even when fixed.
Best of luck.

I still have my Daisy Red Ryder BB gun, which doesn't shoot hard at all, but it scares cats. I have been having one hang around our feeder also. All I need to do is open the patio door now, and it scoots! That statement that they kill birds even though they are not hungry is correct. This one belongs to someone in the neighborhood, that is just their nature. But once you feed a cat, it's yours!

Why don't you try feeding it food. Then it won't be starving and might quit killing the birds??
