the mindset of a cover letter is to let the company know what you can do for THEM.

So lets say that you read about a company, and you see that they are planning a big expansion.....and your expertise happens to be helping companies that are in expansion mode. You can let them know about some of the challenges they are going to face, and some obstacles they will encounter, and then, in the next paragraph, you magically have spent many years helping companies overcome this obstacles, or make the transition much smoother....

Now, they are going to want to talk to you!!!

The key to a cover letter is to get the name of the person who will be doing the hiring or interviewing. If you can't get that then don't waste the effort because it will appear that you put no effort into researching the company or position. Don't repeat the information in your resume. Use phrases like "this position seems in line with my career goals", Regergitate any specific vocabulary from the job posting back to them in the cover letter. It shows that you customized your cover letter to that specific job. Also if you e-mail your resume and cover letter some big companies have programs that scan them for specific words and if they don't come up then it is eliminated and no human will ever see it.

Try googling "sample cover letters"; you will get lots of ideas. Basically, try to make your letter stand out while still sounding professional. don't just repeat what's already on your resume. Tell them why you want to work at their company, what attracts you to it and why you are suited to work there.
