When somebody asks "What do you do for a living?" IS that being NOSY?

I mean, what if you don't want people to know what you do for a living? like if you're not proud of what you do. How would you respond????

Why would you do something 5 or 6 days a week you were embarassed to tell anyone you did. Either find something to respect about what you do or do something else. If you don't want to tell anyone what you do, its time for a change... and the sooner the better.

If someone asks what you do, they are only trying to get to know you. Now.. if they ask how much money you make.. thats another thing altogether.

its not being nosy, its usually the first indicator that they are trying to get to know you. would u like it if they asked a more personal question, like when was the last time you had sex? lol its just polite conversation. if you dont wanna answer then just say what type of field you work in but you would like to move into ___field. that will get them off the subject of what you do now, and give them an insight of who you really are. good luck :)

The question is a social one, an effort to get to get to know you. Often used for small talk. I am not sure why you are offended by the question, as long as its honest work and pays the bills......
You could simply say I work at ABC company, or, I am in industry. Depending on the situation and the person you could make a pun - I am a palmist reading palms is my life, may I read yours?

i don't consider it nosy just common conversation. what's nosy is when they ask how much you make at it. if you don't want to respond, say you don't wish to talk about it. adds an air of mystery. don't you think?
