License for what? Nothing should happen to you. You were simply defending yourself. That is part of what the Martial Arts is about. You shouldn't by any means go looking for trouble but if it happens to find you then you can use it for your defense. Its not your fault that some dumb sap decided that you should be his target instead of a person that couldn't defend himself. It is a total myth that black belts have to register with the local authorities so that they can be held liable.
Part of my Karate ( and I don't know if other schools teach this ) is that " Karate is my secret, I come in Peace....". If you were attacked without provocation then that means that you had come in peace in the first place.
Also, my system doesn't have a "License" per say. There is no official document stating that you may now teach and that anytime in the future that ability may be taken away from you. If you have earned the rank of "Sensei" then you have earned that rank. We do have promotional placks/certificates ( whatever you'd like to call them ) but nothing that states this is a license to teach.

...I am not sure but are you talking about the License to teach within the art? I had a friend who had something like that from TKO...

I know that some arts have registration and licensing for uniformity... I understand that some have ethical codes as well...

Are you asking if the license to teach would be revoked do to excessive force?

I don't think your drivers license would be effected. :)

If someone is attempting to rob you it is justifiable force to "floor them" as long as you don't follow up and continue to beat them while they are relatively helpless on the ground.
And do you mean your driver's license? Because if some idiot told you something like "your hands and feet are registered/licensed as lethal weapons" they're dead wrong. NO ONE HAS ANY PART OF THEIR BODY LEGALLY REGISTERED AS A DEADLY WEAPON or any similar nonsense. This myth most likely came from boxing promoters who would say my man's hands are registered as deadly weapons (like a firearm) to build heat or interest in a fight.

Just like any other self defense situation, you are to use reasonable force and no more. If the attacker stops or says he gives up, you are to stop. If you strike after the attacker has surrendered, you are liable for assault.

You punishment will be carried out according to your measure of skill.

Depends on your federation, teacher and probably the situation.
I reckon most teachers would shake their students hand if it was as simple as your example.
