I got called for a college interview on Sunday, but I assure you that the problem warrants a real business interview procedure/etiquette perspective. I got the call and my mom came to me with the phone saying, "this is Joe Smith from the University calling" so we set up the interview and I didn't realize he didn't say his name to me again. Then my mom came in after and said "Did you catch his name? I'm not sure I heard him correctly. I thought he was going to say this is [your friend] Sam that I think it was Joe Smith but I could be wrong due to 'shock.'" Anyway, I called up the University and the best they could do was dispatch another phone call to him and request that he call me again. But I thought this was kind of silly; we got off to a really great start on the phone and I would hate to have him call me again and have me ask him just what his name is! So, what do I do? calling him at a time when his voicemail would likely pick up but my dad thought this was too juvenile (which, it is!). He told me to call again and explain the situation, but as I said, I feel like it would make both of us uncomfortable before a big interview (my top school). Lastly, I thought I could go in without his name. I mean, meeting him at Starbucks I could just hope he would say his name again or I could smoothly avoid addressing him. Advice please?

go to the meeting, put our your hand and say honestly. It's so nice to meet you. I'm not sure I caught your name properly on the phone, my mother said John Smith, is that correct?

If he says NO, it's really Bart Stucky,
then counter with an apology and use his name.

I"m so sorry Mr. Stucky. Now, where can we start?

Don't worry about his name. The only reason you would need it is to put on a cover letter with your resume. I assume at this point they already have your resume. If you did well as you think you have on the surprise phone interview he will call or write you for the face-to-face interview at which point you have another opportunity to capture his name. You will definatly want his name then because you will need it for the thank you letter for the face-to-face interview.

Just say sorry and ask for his name again. He wont get upset and change his mind about the interview. You will be fine!

Call his phone at midnight.

Or...

Meet him, shake hands and apologize... I'm sorry, my mom didn't give me your name... I'm

problem solved with an icebreaker for the interview to boot.
