As a heathen, of course, Yule is MY reason for the season. And actually, Yule has precious little to do with the solstice.
In the old Northern European primstave calendar, what we call December was named "Before Yule" and January, "after Yule," as though Yule itself existed outside the boundaries of time . . . a sacred season, for feasts, for oaths, for hailing the godhs.
However, the solstice being an observable astronomical event, you will find it celebrated or observed in some fashion in virtually all cultures. December 25th, while not the solstice, is significant because with the more primitive astronomy of the ancients, it was the earliest date at which they could be *certain* the solstice had occurred. Its use for Christmas no doubt stems from it having marked the birth of Mithras for the Romans----since although the early Church did not originally celebrate Christmas, Northern Europe was not converted until long after they had begun to do so.

Hmmm ... is Jesus (God the Son) real?
Let me ask a probing question ... is there such a thing as right and wrong? Think deeply. Is it 'absolutely' wrong to brutally rape women? To impel new born infants upon meat hooks? To steal every last cent from your favorite charity? I don't know, you decide the question. Is there such a thing as absolute right & wrong or is it merely "majority opinion"?
Is there such a thing as absolute "right" ... maybe "good" would be a better word? Think deeply. Or again, is it merely "majority opinion"?
BTW- Is it "right" or a "good thing" to provide medical care, charity, love ... to those in need? (Because atheistic evolution would teach us that 'for the sake of the species' we should allow the 'misfits' among us to DIE ... they're ruining the gene pool!
OK, if you do not believe there is a right or wrong then I don't really have anything else to say to you. You believe 'morality' is a product of evolution and you should take up a new cause to save the species ... eradicate every hospital & charitable organization out there. Your heart is desperately hardened!
BUT, if you are honest enough to admit that there is a moral absolute THEN you must ask yourself how, what, where, when, why and who. If there is an absolute right & wrong (a moral law) then there must be a 'moral law giver'. And you should also take up a new cause ... to discover the answer to those questions.
And by the way, do you consider yourself to be a 'good' person?
I challenge you to find the answer to that question as well and it is very simple right here:

It doesn't matter to me what others celebrate. But they should at least be honest about it... especially since so many are trying to say that it is Not a Pagan holiday. History shows it is. Yule is the reason for the season... for me. Jesus is the reason for Christians.
Catholic Crusader just does that to try to get a rise out of people. Must be one of those kinds of people who thinks only his opinion counts lol ;-)

Well the solstice is factual as we know the northern hemisphere is at its furthest distance away from the sun on Dec 21st, also originally the winter festival was pagan.
Everybody celebrates it in there own way now though, and its all commercialised now.
I just enjoy the time with family and friends, presents and food etc.

The christian faith is a lie there is no record of Jesus being born so nobody knows his birthday. The fact is Constantine tried to unite the religions of Rome and this is why they celebrate Christmas on the same day as the original pagan festival

Hi Reigan,
You can say "Man" without being sexist. Its origin is non-gender specific in nature. It started as Man for person, and "Werman for male, and "Wifman" for the feminine. It was the introduction of the feminine and masculine concepts of case form Latin that caused the the shift in usage, not some sort of patriarchal stratification.
So, say peace to Man without a twinge of guilt or loathing.
PS Of course I don't worry about the supernatural side of Christmas, as I really don't think there is any sort of supernatural world. I do like the peace on Earth part.

Even if He wasn't before He certainly is now. I never hear anything about solstice at this time of year, except maybe on YA. Besides, I don't think most people even know about the solstice, and love Him or hate Him everyone knows about Jesus.
I'm also guessing that the fact that scientists realized that the sun is really just a ball of hot gases kind of put an end to the sun god. And we call it Christmas, not Sungodmas, or Ramas or whatever the sun gods name is.

I think it doesn't matter, we should take this time out to spend with our loved ones. As many of us know, the church wanted the pagans to convert to Christianity so they took the pagan holidays and put Christan tones to it. The birth of the sun - Jesus being born, Spring time - Jesus being resurrected and so on. No Jesus is not technically the reason for the season, but to many Christians he is.

These christians just won`t accept that their forefathers went round stealing all the Pagan feast and festivals and claiming that they were theirs.
According to their own book the kid was born at lambing time and lambing time was in spring not mid winter. But it appears that they either can`t afford a copy of their book or they can`t read....!!
Ps. Christ is a title not a name..
