No , it does not have to be visible. Are you in pain? Does it hurt to hot/cold, to bite on it, or is it loose feeling? Just a few symptoms of an abscess.

Use Hydrogen Peroxide as a mouthwash several times a day. It will bubble into the root area and heal your gums. Gently brush with a soft toothbrush to get it below the gum line.

It is very inexpensive and very beneficial in healing oral problems.

It doesn't have to be visible. If you think you have one - get to a doctor! An infection could spread through out your body and make you very sick!
