my friends told me that you can get a plastic bottle and fill it up with sand and it would be like a silencer almost. is that true?

first thing they are illegal, but i like screwing around with things too, so..... a soda bottle will work on a .22 rimfire with shorts a regular .22 long rifle shell is traveling to fast and you still get the cracking sound. the trick is to get a bullet below the sound barrier to eliminate the sonic boom. the best thing i found out that worked was a 2 liter bottle drill a hole in the cap the same size as you barrel and use .22 shorts all you will hear is the firing pin hitting the primer and the thud of the bullet hitting the dirt. some people said about the potatoe thing i never had any luck with it, if your gonna try a potatoe make sure it does not obstruct the muzzle of the gun or you take a chance of blowing up the gun, or hurting or killing yourself. AND LEAVE THE BOTTLE EMPTY no need for sand

Sorry to say this but your friend is no friend at all. His idea will not make a “silencer almost”. It will merely obstruct the bore, make the bullet miss anything it is aimed at and probably hurt anyone nearby when fired. Anyone who suggests plugging the end of the barrel with anything like a potato is an idiot.

If you live in the USA, the only way to make a silencer legally is to obtain a license (FFL/SOT, >$1200) or apply for a tax stamp ($200) using an ATF form 1. The BATFE routinely approves tax stamps for making and buying silencers, so the only real obstacle to owning them is living in one of the 35 states that allow civilian silencer ownership. Contrary to another answer here, the BATFE does not frown upon home built silencers. I have built several silencers by applying for the $200 tax stamp for each one and the ATF could not care less. It is easy to do if you know how to use a lathe. Take a look at the below links for dealer info, advice and silencer plans. Silencer plans are also available from the US patent office. If you want to buy a silencer, they can be had for as little as $200 (plus $200 tax) from a dealer in your state.

There are plastic bottle adaptors available that are perfectly legal to use for making a silencer out of a plastic bottle; legal only if you get approval from the BATFE by applying for the tax stamp. A bottle silencer still sucks though; they block the sights, make the gun inaccurate, last only a few rounds, and hardly reduce noise compared to a good silencer. A good silencer is going to lower noise by 20-30 decibels (100-1000 times) but your firearm will still be more than 115 decibels even when suppressed. The word silencer is a legal term; they are more accurately called suppressors or moderators.

Any time you obstruct the barrel of a firearm you take a chance on doing damage to your head or other body parts. Never listen to they. I have a nice 20" barrel with vent rib for my 870; the guy didn't notice he had stuck it into some soft mud and plugged the end. It was originally 30" but the end peeled back like a bananna when he fired; I offered him twenty bucks for it and he took it. I had my gunsmith cut it off at 20" and put a bead on it and it works fine as a slug barrel. If you want a silencer get out your checkbook and buy one legally; all it takes is money.

No, those plastic bottle silencers dont work, you will get hurt messing around with one of those bottles.... they didnt even work on a .22 I would only go with a silencer that is made by a professional company.....

no... that's stupid, the sand will just slow/stop your bullet, not to mention how would you like to try and aim a gun with a bottle full of sand on the end. An empty bottle doesn't work either (tried it). I don't know how to make a supressor, but the bottles don't work and don't try it you'll probably just hurt yourself, or worse hurt your gun.

The BTAF frowns on homemade suppressors. A plastic bottle filled with sand will not work but is likely to damage your gun and injure the shooter.

NO...NOT TRUE.. Sand in a bottle won't silence anything, but it will get you hurt or worse....Not to mention it will ruin any gun you try this on.. If you want proof just go on Youtube search and research "silencers" and you will see what I am talking about.

(I hate people who do entire posts in caps).

If you did it there way you might block the muzzle and have the weapon explode in your hand and, potentially, kill you.

It is well known, shown on films, that an empty plastic soda bottle can be used as a silencer. I wouldn't try it myself, so I have no idea if it really works.

Certainly doesn't work with centerfire, see below! But then silencing center fire weapons doesn't usually work like in the movies.

Seems to work with a subsonic 22 though, see the second and third links.

I still very much don't recomend trying this.

no it will slow the bullet down and most likely mess up your gun from the sand going up the barrel and getting into the action

tell your FRIENDS, that the idea sounds good, but before YOU try it, YOU will need THEM, to show you how good It works, by giving a shooting demonstration, with you present.
then, stand about 50 yards behind them, when the gun is fired.
that, you will be uninjured & can tell the law, what happened
