Ive currently been working on my job as a retail associate for 3 weeks and recently they've been hiring a lot of people...for thanksgiving all my family is going to another state and I will be here alone...is it appropriate to ask for 4 days vacation even though i just started... I mean there are a lot of people that can fill my position, but then again im asking time off when theyre going to be busy. Would it be okay if I just asked I mean if not its okay ? If so how do I ask ?

if you've been there for a month it's fair to ask for time off. especially during this time of year. they're probably hiring a lot of newbs to cover black friday and the seasonal hires, so you should be able to get it off, though by now it's far too late to ask it off. You could just call in really sick though and return the next week.

*note* typically, you should ask for any time off at least 2 weeks in advance. in this case, since it was for a holiday, you should have let them know when you were hired that your family was going away for thanksgiving. if they are going away for christmas, let them know you won't be availble IMMEDIATELY.

I wouldn't ask. Three weeks into a job, you're not yet an asset to the company, if you know what I mean. Some retail stores forbid employees to take vacation days between Thanksgiving (or day before) and New Years due to the holiday season. If you're working full time, you may not have accrued any vacation time at all, and if you're part time, you probably don't have any. I would probably bite your tongue and just spend the holidays alone - or better yet, go to a friend's house.

Don't worry i've had to ask for about 3 days off recently. I went on a deep one and said my (non existant) girlfriend has to have an abortion and i want to be there with her for a few days. My supervisor wanted to give me a week and was kind enough to take 3 days off my annual 20 days holiday leaf so i still got paid. Obviously if you don't do it this way then the company will mark you down as absent instead of 'holiday' which looks bad on your company papers.
So yea if you study also you can expect work to give you some reasoning towards your studies. They obviously put you through 'we want 6 months to a years committment from you' so butter them up by reminding them how happy you are you got the job and keep a stressed but hopeful face before you drop it.

P.s - Kindly ask for a private moment and do it 1 on 1 in the office. You'll be fine ;)

I know this probably isn't the answer you wanted, but after only 3 weeks you're really not entitled to ask for so much time. I've been working at the same place for a year now and I'm still uneasy about asking for a long lunch! I'm usually very family oriented, but in this case I'm afraid the job is going to have to come first.

You can ask, but you probably won't get the time off. It's the busiest retail season of the year. I know it sucks spending a holiday alone. I had to spend Christmas away from my family my first year out of college b/c they live in PA and I was in NC. You'll get through it.

Unless you have a back up plan for employment, I would not ask for the time off. I'm sure that there are a lot of other employees who have more time than you have already asked for the time off. Maybe next year would be better

Personally, I don't think I would ask for 4 days off. I mean , you haven't even been there for a month. Perhaps a day or two, at the most

It can't hurt to ask. Just simply state the truth. All they can say is no. (I personally would not ask, this should have been addressed before you accepted the position, that way they would have a heads up)

3 weeks? Nope, don't ask. They're hiring others, they can just as easily hire someone to take your place. For good.

You have only been there for 3 weeks, I would tread lightly on that one...But ask your boss, because who knows you might get the time off...
