The reason I ask: I was taught that it was "Love one another as I have loved you," and to love God. I'm Roman Catholic.
While talking to a Baptist, he told me I was wrong, that Jesus's commission to us was "Go out and convert the nations," and that "Love one another" was only for, as he put it, "the brethren," the people in his church.
He was very adamant that he did not have to love people who weren't already "saved," per the Baptist church. I found that very interesting.
What is your church, and what does it hold as Jesus's greatest, most important command to us?

Your baptist friend is wrong and you are right. We are to love one another as Jesus loved us. Period.
How unChristian would it be for us to love only those who are fellow Christians? Didn't Jesus say something in scripture that of what credit is it for us to love only those those who love us, since even the pagans do this? Didn't He say we should love our enemies? Further, Jesus' death was for ALL people, which means He loves ALL people.
I would like for you to ask the baptist this: How does he expect to convert even one person if he first does not love them?
God bless.

Well Jon by now you will realise that different faiths have their own'spin' on what Jesus's commission was.As a Spiritualist I believe we all have to travel through our lives undergoing a Karmic journey.Jesus was a teacher, and indeed he did teach and promote Love, Caring, Sharing, and Understanding.Four simple concepts which prove impossible for many people.Spiritualists dont believe Jesus died for our sins.God descended in the guise of a man-Jesus, to rid the world of the evil that the devil had flood the world with.In my opinion it's shame God ever left.We certainly could do with some direction nowadays. But your OK,your aRoman Catholic.Just confess your sins you'll be right, won't you?

Don't know what flavor "baptist" that one was...but not any I know about for sure.... "...Love The Lord Thy God with all Thy Heart, all thy soul, all thy mind, and all thy strength"
"...love thy neighbor as thy self"
These are the two comandments Jesus spoke.... The Commission to The Church, which is all of The True Christian Faith, is to "Go and spread The Good News of The Salvation Message to all the Nations"... Not to impose it upon any one... but to give it... The Word and Will of God is not to be imposed upon any one by any means.
There is only One Church and Jesus The Christ is The Head of The Church.
All who come to God in The Way He prescribes will receive His free gift of Salvation. Those become part of The Body of The Church of which Jesus The Christ is The Head. Those are the ones of The True Christian Faith. Only those of The Church will enter Heaven.

Jesus himself said the greatest command is to love the Lord our God with all your Heart, soul, and mind. The second is to love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:36-40. If that is what Jesus thinks then why should I think differently.

Jesus did not put any denominations in His commandments. Jesus established a church(the Catholic Church) not a religion or denominations. We are to love all, not just those we assoiciate with. Strangers, the saved and the unsaved, they are all our brothers and sisters.Jesus loves them so why shouldnt we?

and Jesus said to them " All authority is give to me in heaven and on earth- Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things I have commaneded you: and lo, I am with you, even to the end of the age."
