it cost me a tank and a half from kingston (west london) to plymouth and back , so about 35 quid one way? was gunning it aswell

The fastest way would by train. First Great Western trains run hourly from Reading to Plymouth and the fastest trains take only 2 hours 30minutes (the distance is about 220 miles).
Tickets booked in advance are the cheapest.

If you have, or can get, a card that reduces the fare then this may get cheaper...

Well its a straight road more or less M4 and m5 Coaches are quite reasonable you will be surprised, National Coaches do a good service,You will pay Double or more on a train

Your best bet is to hop on the Great Western Railway. Good service, fast travel in comfort.

have a look at www.getmethere.co.uk, this gives you a route, and works out your fuel consumption etc....it should give you some idea of the cost of driving there!! Have a safe trip.
