Religion is the great pit into which many folks have thrown all that they do not understand. Now that understanding is increasing, the role of religion will diminish, although it will be necessary for people to feel less anxiety about living and dying for such a prediction to come true.

Atheism, multi-culturalism, secular progressiveism are the greatest problems facing our society today. These ism's have brought us abortion on demand, and general moral decay to the point when anyone questions immoral behavior they are labeled a bigot or a homophobe.
As for "religion", you need to define whether you are referring to God or to the man made religions that have their gods. If you mean christianity, then the problem is the lack of effect that christianity is having on society. So in that sense "religion" is a great failing in our society.

On the contrary. Religion is a pillar in the development of our society. Historical information, philisophical ideals, etc were documented in religious writings. The question today is whether it is slowing the continuing evolution of man.

Not so much religion, but the foundations upon which it is built: faith.
When a person believes something on faith, they accept the proposition that you don't have to have any reason or evidence to believe it is true. Because of this, any belief, no matter how harmful or ridiculous, can and must be valid if it is based on faith.
People who believe on faith are primitive, irresponsible and immoral people. Once they evolve, the world will be much better off.

Not religion itself. I think the religions themself are actually pretty pure at heart and safe. The people who speak for the religions do some dumb stuff and make rules that have led to failing.
