Doesn't say any REAL words? He does understand what a lot of objects are. My ped said that they will be looking for him to say at least 3 words by the time he's 15 mo. I had a child care provider say he should know at least 15 words by now and it didn't make me feel too good. I do know every child is different and there might be some kids his age who can say that much but I think that's high expectations. I'm really not personally worried about him but I just needed some experienced moms to give me some relief of stupid comments people make! I'm a first time mommy.

He can definately hear because he understands a lot of commands, don't mean to sound like he's a animal lol but if you ask him to get a certain object (toys) or his cup, teddy bear ect he gets it. He even puts his toys away before bed every night! Thank you everyone, I figured that he was normal and I really shouldn't be concerned because he does have a lot of time. This provider just made no effort to say "well I understand every child is different" I'm just a mother with bear claws!

My son is 16 months and has really just started to talk saying like ball, bird little things like that. I was concerned when i went in for my 15 month check up and my ped said it can be very normal for them to not start to talk to 16-17 months. My son is very active. He runs and climbs. I think he is just into physical activity right now instead of talking. Make sure you read to him. They say that will help too. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with my son seek help early because he is now about to be 4 and is just started to talk where I can understand what he is saying. Sometimes we think as parents no my child I feel so bad well don't hon get him help now so that he can express how he feels. My so was acting out and now I know why because he was having a hard time with communication. Your son should at least say the basic like No, Yes Hot, Cold, momma, Daddy things like that . Just remember not every kid is the same so develop faster then others and some don't. I would take him to a speech specialist and make sure every thing okay. Good Luck

Does he at least say Mama, Dada, and one other word? At 14 months my daughter didn't say a lot but understood everything I said. After about 18 months is when she really improved her category a lot. I remember counting about 10 words around 15 months and her adding 10 more words every month thereafter. I was thinking about getting her tested at one point because she had a lot of her "own words" which I could understand but no one else could. She is now 2 1/2 and talks up a storm, putting long sentences together, and using the correct words for her old language or getting pretty close to it. For example: for monkey, she used to say Ba-Ka, then it became Bunkey. She can say monkey but prefers Bunkey. You are going to the pediatrician, so that's a sign you are doing everything right. Also, try to make your son ask for things because I always knew what my daughter wanted, I would give it to her instead of making her communicate. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about it kids talk when they want to. My son is 16 months and only says a few words: Mama, Daddy, tiser (for sister), and Kitty and Baby. They will talk in their own time. He didn't start talking until he was about 15 months old, but my daughter who is now 4 was talking at 11 months. Just give it time. If he isn't talking by 24 months then I would ask my ped again. Good Luck and Have a Great Thanksgiving.

I wouldn't be concerned ... but as a parent that is just not possile... my son was 28 months before he even said mom :( and that broke my heart :( I took him to a speech therepist and they said he was in the bottom 4% of his age group which killed me, then they told me to have him re-assessed in 6months and if there was an improvment to talk to the therapist about my options of if it was even needed... and by 30m he was talking sentences, non stop.... now he is doing really well

I also am a daycare provider and see what different ages kids start to talk... i have a 23 month old boy here who just started speaking "words" about 2 weeks ago... not a word before then and now he can say about 20 words... it comes when they are ready... UNFORTUNATLEY its like potty training LOL they do it in thier own time :)

cheer up mom.... he will get it, but if you are concerned... which i woudln't be but...if you are take him to a speech therapist to be sure :)

good luck !!

Girl...I don't know any 15 month olds that can say 15 words. Don't worry about it. my oldest was 2 and only said 10-15 words. He's now almost 5 and won't keep his mouth shut!!!

If in the next few months nothing is happening, get his hearing checked. Worse comes to worse, he might have to go to speech therapy.

But for right now, enjoy the quiet....it doesn't last forever :)

I would check his hearing just to be on the safe side. That can cause a lot of problems. But as we know boys are usually slower so as long as you are not worried and his hearing if fine Then everything is ok for right now.

Kinda funny but my hubby talked until 2 then woke up with his own language till he was 6 then woke up and everything was fine. Dr's still don't know why

Every kid is different. I had one pediatrician declare my child failure to thrive because he was smaller than "average" but said he was ahead in all other developmental areas like speech, comprehension and motor skills. My new ped was impressed with how smart he was and said there was no way he was failure to thrive.
Having said that, have his ears and mouth been checked? My nephew was 2 and couldn't talk. He was my sister's first and her ped was a total jerk. He insisted my sister wasn't working with him enough or stimulating him enough. He accused her of leaving him in his playpen with the TV all day! She switched pediatricians and found out he was tongue tied, meaning his tongue couldn't move enough to properly form words.
Don't listen to the child care provider. If you don't believe your current ped, get a second opinion from another ped!

No not @ all each child progresses @ there own rate now if the toddler is close to 17 months and nothing has been said then you should see a doctor to rule out any hearing lost, or developmental delays. Hope everything works out for the best. Peace and blessings

What about experienced Dads?

I wouldn't worry about it. My daugther was talking up a storm pretty quick around 13 to 14 months.

My son however is a bit more on the shy time and he waited to talk awhile. He is seven now and I see no problems. Kids will start talking when they are good and ready. I would not be to worried about a couple months.
