Good for you! Singing is awesome! You can never make it big until you start small. Start by auditioning at you school for the choir or for a musical production. American Idol won't really get you anywhere, trust me. Think of all those people that also think they can sing, and they get their hearts broken when they tell them that they need lessons or whatever. If you are in college, or when you get there, audition and make yourself know. That is a way to start. You are not going to be magically transformed into a pop sensation over night. It will take years of dedication, hard work, and persistence. Don't ever give up hope! You will never know where you can go until you start out small and work your way up! what kind of music? if you sing contemporary, then do local competitions like gimme the mike. If there aren't any near you, then beg to sing at friends and relatives weddings, anniversaire's, etc. Having stupid gigs Will lead to better ones, lol. Try street singing. Just grab a corner and a guitar buddy and go for it. Gigs are the ONLY way to get discovered for talent.
If you sing classical, then take classes. Major in vocal performance. It takes ten times the skill of popular music, but if you work hard at it it will pay off!!!

Find out about local open-mic nights. Join local choirs and music societies. You can work yourself up if you are any good...after you gain a few years of experience, people will ask you to sing solo in concerts, and some one may spot you.
I won a singing contest by chance last year, something to do with X Factor in the UK.

Promote yourself sing for your family go to gatherings or family reunings and sing your heart out ( i love singing too )
Go to auditions ask the choir teacher.....and never give up ok
