My 17 month old son climbed out of his crib this afternoon. Everybody says once they start that you need to move them to a twin bed. He really hates to sleep and I know that this is going to be a struggle. I don't think he is mature enough...does anyone have any suggestions?

We didn't move our daughter until 2 1/2... you know your child best. Something to think about is a toddler bed... closer to the ground if that is what you are worried about. Sometimes it works if you make put the bed up in his room a while before you put him in it. Try napping in the bed. Hope it helps!

I just moved my 17 mo old today to a toddler bed. She's fallend out once already tonight. So far she hasn't done it again. She didn't try to climb out of her crib or anything I just thought it was time. I thought it would be hard too, but I just put her down to bed just like normal, I didn't change a thing. Turned on her music box and covered her all up like we do every night and left the room with her awake. Now, after she fell out I took a thick blanket and rolled it up and put it length wise along her bed so she could tell the edge so maybe that will keep her in better. (I pray it does!!) I think if you want to move him to a toddler bed go a head. Kids will fall a couple times then they get the hang of things. If my daughter falls out over and over again I might put the crib rail back up (her crib converts to a toddler bed). And I will try again later. I hope this helps you!! :o)

My daughter climbed out last month, she was 13 months old. I too was considering getting her toddler bed set up over the weekend. I let her sleep in her crib for the rest of the week and she didn't do it again. Its been a month and nothing? I am glad that I didn't switch her because I know that she is not ready and it would be torture to get her to sleep in there. (she would keep getting out) Give it a few days and see if he does it again before you make the big move. Good luck

I had a friend who's baby was out of the crib at 17 or 18 months and she does just fine. They love being in a big kids bed. You can get those guards to put up on the sides to keep them from rolling off when their asleep. It is much safer than them falling from the crib which is quite high for a baby.

I have a 3 1/2 yr. old and a 1 1/2 yr. old and neither one know that they can climb out of the crib ! However, my 3 1/2 yr. old sleeps on a crib mattress on the floor of our room from time to time OR you can get a toddler bed.. OR you can get a rail for a regular twin size bed so he doesn't roll out... OR you can lower the crib mattress if you haven't done so already.. OR you can get a nylon mesh "cage" for the top of the crib to keep him inside at night. You can find them for around $80 at Babies R Us..... good luck

When I was shopping for cribs for my son I asked the saleslady when a child should be moved from a crib to a toddler bed she told me that the rule she used was when a baby climbs out once its an accident. If they do it again its time to move the child to a toddler bed. If it was once remove bumpers and stuffed animals a baby can use to give himself a boost out of the crib.

But just remember that your little one is going to have to graduate eventually so you are really going to have to pump yourself up about getting him/her to sleep in thier own bed.

Good luck.

I agree about the crib tent. I just got one for my 16 month old. I believe it's too unsafe to put her in a bed just yet. She sleeps much better now that she can't get out of her crib. I would recommend getting the Crib Tent II with the net surround. This way they can't throw anything out through the slats and they can't squeeze their hand through the slats to open the zipper.

My son was doing the same thing. I bought him a toddler bed, and I really had a rough time getting him to bed. What I would do is put him on a strict routine. half hour before bedtime, we would brush our teeth, read a story, sing a song, and it was lights out. I would get a magazine for myself, and sit outside his room, so that when he would get up and out, I was there to put him right back in. Don't say anything, just put him back. This may take awhile for him to go to sleep at night, and you may find yourself doing this for quite a few days, but the end result is fantastic. Also seen this method used by The Nanny. Good Luck!

My daughter is 15 months old and she sleeps in a toddler bed. She's old enough to not just fall out of bed and she can get in bed when she wants a nap and out when she's done. But i do believe it all depends on the child. Just give it a try and see how it works out.

People have told you the real deal. He is mature enough to climb out of a crib. Once they are climbing out, they will continue to climb out. The child is more likely to get injured from climbing out of a crib than a regular bed. It's time to make your home SAFE instead of trying to lock him up.

Folks, the nylon mesh 'cage' is a strangulation hazard. DO NOT USE!
