There are 3 types of Light Controlled Crossings for pedestrians.
Pelican - this one has a flashing amber phase for drivers.
Puffin - this one has an Infra-red beam that keeps the traffic lights at red whilst pedestrians cross
Toucan - can be used by cyclists as well as pedestrians.
There is also a crossing for horse riders, but the name escapes me right now (because i don't know what its name is)! The button is about 6 feet high.

Pelican crossings. These are signal-controlled crossings operated by pedestrians. When the red figure shows, do not cross. When a steady green figure figure shows, cross if safe.
Puffin crossings differ from pelican crossings as the red and green figures are above the control box on your side of the road and there is no flashing green figure phase. Press the button and wait for the green figure to show.

There are 2 types of crossing that are pedestrian controlled.
The first is called a "Pelican" crossing.
The second is a newer type called a "Puffin" crossing.
The difference is...
A pelican can have the button pressed and a timer starts to operate then the lights change.
A Puffin crossing has an infra red motion detector..so if you press the button and walk away the lights wont change.

Pedestrian crossings are the collective name for a variety of different crossings.
Zebra is the crossing that doesn't have any interaction between you and stopping the traffic. It just has the orange becons.
Pelican Crossing Stands for 'Pedestrian light control'. At this type of crossing the pedestrian pushes a button, traffic lights stop the traffic.
Believe it or not but there are more for example there's also a
Puffin crossing which stands for 'Pedestrian user friendly intelligent'. These crossings have detectors that can tell when pedestrians are waiting to cross. The detectors control the traffic lights so that people have enough time to cross safely, but also change them to green as soon as the crossing is clear and there is no-one else waiting to cross.
There are more google for them. ;-)

Pelican Crossing.
I think this one was the one that involved the Green Cross Man in that TV advert many years ago. He was a big bloke dressed in a green and white 'superhero' oufit with a big green cross on the front. He told us to only cross when the green man lit up, and learn the 'Green Cross Code'.
