Don't worry, it will grow back to it's original lenght and it might take up to 3-4 months to do so. The good thing is that the fur will probably be shinyer and silky and, if you groom him regularly, your cat might be prettier than before.
As for your cat being traumatized, he will adapt very rapidly. Just be sure that your house is a very confortable temperature (if you see him chilling then you know you must put the heater on). He might want to get warm places for a while but overall, having shaved is not bad at all. Many people does it.
But if I were you, I would get a couple of free session off the groomer for that mistake. If you had a competition cat like me, you would be pretty upset right now.
By the way, it is not necessary to have your cat shampoo. Cats are very clean fellow and they don't need shampoo.

When I was a chlid my mother bought a persian cat. We combed him often (daily, usually several times per day). During the summer months when our appartment was hot and his har was shedding, we'd get him shaved. (And also because for some reason in the summer his fur would knot like crazy! maybe something to do with the heat and shedding)...
ANYWAYS his fur always grew back before the winter (so lets say 4-5 months for it to fully grow back) and the fur would always come back looking so much healthier!
I'm so sorry that this happened to you though. I'd be VERY upset if my groomer made a mistake like this as well.

Wow, some of you on here are a little sue happy! And turn them into the city? Come on. I know for the owner it was probably quite shocking to see their kitty naked, but the cat is fine and not harmed in any way. I have a cattery and I shave my cats in the summer and they actually seem to like it when they have the short hair. The groomer probably had a very busy day and got a little carried away with the clippers. (You did ask for a belly and tail shave so they just kept on going!) Yes, it is no excuse, but I'd say a couple of free visits should make up for it.

YIKES that's awful! I'd sue them for sure!
I adopted a Persian that was shaved down because he'd been found as a stray and was really badly matted. It took about 10 months for his coat to come completely back in - sorry :( And yes - it should grow back out to the same length.
Sue those jerks - that's screwed up! Especially now that winter's here - your poor kitty :(

Good news...Yes the hair will grow back and it will more than likely be more then the same, it will look better!! I hope you didn't pay the groomer for the service. I think I would found another person to do the job next time.

I'd lodge a complaint against the business with your city.
Fur will be completely grown back in 2 months, but within one month it should be about half the length that it was origionally.

the fur will grow back and probably much more lustrous. I would imagine it will grow back rathe quickly in this weather. I don't think your cat will be tramatized much to be honest. mush less for him to have to groom and he will like the extra contact between a warm hand stroking him he will be able to feel being stroked. Cats love the extra contact

your cat's fur will grow back, but i wouldn't recommend that groomer to anyone since they seem to have a problem listening.
