I can spend up to $40. I will be making margaritas. I need at least 1 Liter.
I've been looking at the Jose Cuervo Tradicional, because it's relatively cheap and I've heard good things. Is this the way to go? Or should I consider alternatives?
Also, as for margarita mix...is the regular Jose Cuervo brand good?

Go for Cuervo gold, it's perfect for margaritas. Patron is better, but putting it in margaritas would be a bit of a waste... that stuff should be saved for shots! As for margarita mix... hmm, it's all a bit icky - you'd be better off squeezing a ton of limes and getting hold of a bottle of Triple Sec (or better still, even if it's not quite the traditional way - trust me, it tastes better - Cointreau)... margaritas are so easy to make, you'd be silly not to! Plenty of salt round the rim of the glasses, too. Oh, and make one for me!
Enjoy! :)

Jose Cuervo isn't the best Tequila. It's just...... okay.
Look for a Tequila that is at least 80 proof. You want a "gold" Tequila for Margaritas. This is a "mixto" meaning it's not a Tequila with 100% agave.

Jose Cuervo is great for margaritas.More bang for your buck. If you were going to do shots I would say Patron, but it can be a little pricey. Non the less a good tequila though.
Be careful with the tequila. It can make people do crazy things and can be very tricky. It will creep up on you!

Never been a cuervo fan. My favorite cheap tequila is Dos Dedos. Forget the mix, make 'em from scratch!

Margareta ville is a good cheap tequila. DON'T BUY CLEAR TEQUILA, only buy GOLD TEQUILA.
If you are doing shots you need a better tequila, but for margaritas don't spend to much, people will not know the difference in the mixer.

Since you are making margaritas, I say go for it. The mix is so strong that you won't taste the quality of the tequila.

Well. here in Mexico we wouldn't touch Cuervo or Sauza. They're really the lowest brands in rankings.
