My fiance and I are planning on going to Jamaica with our family and friends to get married. But, he wants to get married before we go at a JOP to make things easier with my insurance, etc. (you don't get your marriage license from Jamaica for 12-14 weeks).
I talked to my travel agent and she said it's not an option for the Jamaican officials to just not file the marriage certificate once the wedding is finished.
So, is it legal to marry the same person twice and file both licenses for both marriages?

If I do a renewal of vows at the resort we are going, they do not treat it as a wedding. I want the real wedding. The woman I talked to said that they will have to file the license in Jamaica.
And, it's not saving a few bucks by getting married early - my fiance doesn't have health insurance and would be going on mine.
So, my question IS: what will happen if 2 marriage licenses are filed for the same 2 people?

my advice for what it's worth-

have the wedding here for the sake of paperwork. short sweet courthouse wedding.

Before you leave for Jamaica, make sure your insurance is updated and your name is changed with social security, the dmv and on your passport office (if you want to change your name) before you go.

Go to Jamaica, have fun. Have your big fancy wedding there with your friends and family without the hassle of overseas paperwork.

Best thing to do is ask at the county office where you live. Just a quick call will get you an answer (although it could render the person on the other end of the phone mute).

One thing you could do is this. Go to the JOP and have a legal marriage performed. Go to Jamaica and have the traditional ceremony performed. Since you won't actually be getting married in Jamaica, you won't have to worry about the marriage license being filed. Check with the priest (or ???) who is supposed to be performing the ceremony whether or not he/she is agreeable to doing that. Also might want to take a certified copy of the marriage license from the JOP with you just in case there are any questions.

Never hurts to ask.

You dont have to get a license in Jamaica if you get married at the JP before you leave. You only have to get a license at the location that marries you first. The one in Jamaica would be more of a vowel renewal since you will already be technically married. You just need to let the person who is marrying you in Jamaica know that you are already married and did so at the JP back home so that he doesnt need to sign a license.

Edit- You cant file a marriage license twice. When you go to the courthouse to get a license you have to answer questions and that is one of them. Are you two already married. If you want a real wedding in Jamaica you need to just wait til than to get married and not have the JP wedding. Sorry

Before you go crazy, check with your employer and your insurance company. You may have more problems with your Jamaica wedding than you think. First, do they recognize an international wedding? Second if the license doesn't return for 12-14 weeks you are way beyond the change of life event limit of 30 days. (you usually have 30 days from being married, having a kid, divorcing, etc. to change your enrollees - although I don't remember showing proof because I did it online)

Next, find out if they have a domestic partner benefit. You may already be eligible for benefits and don't know it. If you have been living together for prob. 6 mos. or longer you can possibly register with the insurance co. as domestic partners. It was added in for same sex couples but anyone is eligible. It is for long term committed relationships and since you are getting married you qualify. The taxing is different (paying premiums pre tax vs. post tax) but who cares, it's only for a little while. I was able to get on my husband's health ins. 6 months prior to our wedding because of this, and let me tell you it saved us a lot of money. After we were married, I just changed my status to spouse.

Get your paper work done before going to Jamaica, even if done by JOP. Then just HAVE your wedding in Jamaica as planned. The Jamaican officials can do your wedding, but you can explain that you don't need them to do any paperwork... they are just their to do the ceramony. Not a big freaking deal.

no u cannot file again after marriage the only way this is possable is if you seperate and get back together...but you can renew your vows without involving a new license..it doesnt need to be on paper to show each other how much you care for one another does it? your already married the state doesnt care about the grey areas in between either your married or your devorced to them...its kinda pointless to file again after you already have.

good luck to you hun and have an awesome trip, let us know how everything goes!!

I'm not sure what resort your getting married at, but I was married at Beaches/Sandals, and there was an option to do a vow renewal. Our planner said it would be exactly the same. I suggest calling the planner at the hotel with the question, instead of your travel agent.

You can have a ceremony, without the legal papers. I think you would have to get divorced first to "legally" get married again. A lot of people have ceremonies to renew there vows, you just don't get a new marriage certificate.

I dont believe so.
And you will already be married so the 2nd wedding wont really mean anything. If it were me, I would just not care about the insurance. I would be taking out my own insurance, travelling as a single girl and coming back a married one. Some things are more important that saving a few bucks on insurance.
