The island is in Italy . The Italians pronounce it : Sardenia .

I'm sorry to disagree other Italian's answer since the origin of the name Sardegna has nothing to do with the fishe's name. Sardegna comes from the Latin Sardinia that's the name the ancient Romans gave to this island because of their inhabitans which name was Sardi.

Hey, I'm Italian. Sardines were named after the island of Sardinia, where they were once in abundance.
