It follows that they would be more prone to suicide since, if all we are is just meat and bone and electricity and water, what difference does living or dying make?

mrs mad maddy, maybe you also haven't suffered yet. What does meat have to live for? If you are suffering enough, would you kill yourself?

happy kid...did I say that? or did you? I'm not talking about what you'd live for. I'm talking about what you would DIE for. To end suffering. Would you die to end your suffering? You're just meat. You have no future or purpose. What purpose does a lamb chop have? So why not get it over with, IF all you are doing is suffering. If you're not suffering that is a totally different question.

geisha badda- punishment, smunishment. Who said anything about afterlife, or punishment. I'm asking you atheists, if there is no purpose to suffering, WHY DO IT? WHY SUFFER, if you can end your suffering. And what's this nonsense about God? who said anything about god?

zombie...what rubbish is this about average this or average that? I'm not writing a thesis on statistics. Leave the imaginary "average" whatevers out of it and answer for yourself.

TL, what is this? some kind of them against us scenario? I'm asking pithy, socratic-like questions for my own amusement. I'm certainly not trying to convert anybody. Most of the atheists answers seems strangely hostile and defensive. Now I have to watch my left flank with you?

worship? no WONDER you people became atheists. Haven't you ever heard of Lao Tzu? Taoism? Good LORD! Worship is going in the opposite direction.

To the contrary, we realize that we are mortal, which gives most of us reason to live (it won't last forever). It's a hard fact to accept.

Why do YOU endure suffering? It follows that Christians would be more prone to suicide since, if you expect to go to Heaven anyway, why not kill yourself now? If all we are is just a soul wrapped in a sinful, filthy body, and you really think the heavenly father will welcome you into his kingdom after you die, what difference could living or dying possibly make to YOU?

Atheists have the same capacity to value life that every other human being has, myself being a prime example. In fact, since there is no fairy tale afterlife, I'll argue that the average atheist likely values life MORE than the average theist.

I'm quite happy to be alive thanks.
I would have thought it would have been Christians that would be more prone to want to commit suicide. Just that I often see Christians on here almost wishing for the end of the world.

We all make a purpose in life (some more grand or selfless or exciting than others)... if you want, you can make yours about your god (which I doubt you've even done).
The kind of thinking you're presenting usually comes with "why not kill and sin and stuff"... its people like you that make me appreciate religion.

The difference is that we recognize that this is the only life we get -- which actually leads atheists to cherish life even more than the average theist, and put more value on the alleviation of suffering.

Actually, more people kill themselves in the name of religion than for any other purpose, whether it be because a young gay man has faced retribution for coming out, or because it's the valiant thing to do in war. Think about it.

if you see no purpose in exitstence beyond worshipping a fictional zombie then by all means, go ahead and whack yourself.
Athiests generally have real purpose to their lives, unlike silly religious fanatics.

What difference does it make to who? Kinda depends.
Plus, just because it makes no difference doesn't mean we don't want to live. Why would you assume that? There is still fun to be had.
