By the way, this question is asked at least once a week.

EDIT: Sorry Treg, but I disagree that he would have driven that much differently. He had 30 top 10's this year, which is all about consistency. I'm not saying Dale Sr.'s numbers might not have changed......but why would Gordon have drove any differently then he did this year?

Treg: I'm not saying that Jimmie doesn't deserve to be the champion this year. What he did was impressive. I'm not saying that I want to go back to the old system either, as the last 4 races of this year would have been boring for many fans. All I'm saying is that under the old system, Jeff would have 6 championsips. He wouldn't have changed his driving style that much to knock out a 300+ point margin.

The 12 car chase system is a big joke, just like letting slow drivers get in a race just because they are a past champion. When they start the chase, all the other owners, sponsors, and drivers should just park their cars for the rest of the year and see how many fans fill the stands then, for the greedy, money hungry "France's"! I use to be a race car driver in the 70's (raced against K. Schrader when he was just a kid), and you ran a time trial, and made the feature, or you ran a heat race, the semi-feature and if you didn't finish in the top two or three in the semi- feature you were through for the night---- no feature for running too slow. Nascar and the Frances's need to get back to racing because they are killing a great Sport. Look at the ratings and the grandstands! They're both falling off! Ratings because the races are just follow the leader anymore, and the grandstands because the ticket prices are so over priced it's just plain ludicrous. Maybe it's time Nascar did like the world of outlaws? Run a full show and race every lap to make the feature, and put on a good day of racing.

It's hard to say, because they AREN'T using the old points system. He would have driven a little different, as would have everybody else if they were still using that format. That's like asking how many more championships would Dale Sr. have won if he were still alive. We will never know, what's done is done. All I know is that JIMMIE JOHNSON is the BACK TO BACK CHAMPION under the CURRENT system!

Bizz: There were times they gambled and stayed out, knowing the points would get reset anyway. If they had been looking at every finish counting towards the championship I think they would have been a little more conservative. Their aggressive calls got them a win when they got the rain delay and when it looked like his motor was gowing to blow. I think they might have done things differently but we will never know. Jeff is a great champion and even he admits they flat out got beat this year. If HE can accept it why can't his fans? There is NO WAY you can try and tell me that with 10 wins and 4 in a row when he needed them during the chase that Jimmie Johnson didn't deserve to be the champion, which is what this question always implies.

Bizz: Yes, he PROBABLY would have won. I'm just saying we will never know because it wasn't under that system. They all knew the format at the beginning of the season and managed race strategies accordingly. There are always ifs and couldas in racing.

Jeff is a 6 time champion. Period. The chase provides a champion through 10 races. I like to choose my champion by a 36 race schedule.

He'd have 5 championships if the chase system hadn't screwed him out of it this year.
