They keep comparing Johnson's 10 wins to Gordon's 13 wins in 1998. What they fail to mention is that Gordon had 10 wins in both 1996 and 1997. That's three seasons in a row with 10+ wins. By the way, Jeff took second to Terry Labonte in the 1996 championship...and Terry won only 2 races that year compared to Jeff's 10. Jimmie still has a ways to ge before he gets to Jeff's level. He's had a good couple of years, but he's nowhere close to dominating the sport like Jeff did back then.

Treg: I agree and disagree. The cars might be closer these days...but you had just as many good teams back then, and possibly more. Hendrick, RCR, Yates, Roush just to name four.

competition is much closer now because of technology.
Igrew up the same time Jimmie, Jeff GOrdon was in his early twenties when he started kikn ***. What he did was incredible and what he has done is legendary. People fail to see the history of facts for whatever reason...I think the chase is stupid. Not to take anything away from the 48, he's come a long way and is very talented but it seems like all you have to wory about is making the chase and then pouring it on. ie. the last two years. It seems Gordon will have to dominate the series as a whole, an d if you look at the season and still think competition is not tight then you need to put that warm beer down and grab a cold one and sit back watch closer.

i think of it grow to be reliable for the sport, no longer lots because of the fact those 3 ruled yet because of the fact 3 communities and 3 distinctive manufacturers ruled this twelve months. final twelve months grow to be particularly lots a 2 horse race with the two certainly one of them being from a similar team. some new rivalries have been created this twelve months and the thrill point grow to be as extreme because it relatively is been going into the chase. the way Kyle started and Carl complete the season grow to be remarkable and Jimmie's third in a row is NASCAR historical past. It grow to be an extraordinary twelve months for NASCAR so a ways as i'm worried! 4's fantastic N 09!!!!

Jeff's 13 wins was also out of only 34 races, a much higher percentage than 10 out of 36.

Jimmie is right now as good as anyone, but on an all time list, he's not up there yet...Jeff Gordon is on top of everything, including having just had the best season of any driver (400 points better than Jimmie's).

And you won't EVER see dominace like Gordon's in the mid to late 90s ever again. Even Jeff will tell you that the teams and cars weren't as close to each other then as they are now. As far as Jimmie NOT dominating the sport, he now has 6 years in a row (from his rookie season to 2007) of finishing in the top 5. Gordon's longest such streak is 4 years in a row.

Bizz: Again, there are more quality teams now, qualifying times are MUCH closer and the races have more extremely close finishes. Certainly there was good competition back then but it was not as deep from the top to the bottom in my opinion.

Jefflawd....was wrong, there were only 33 races the year Jeff won 13. The reason they are making such a big deal is because it is in the now. Plus he did it in the Championship chase.

They are trying to say that jimmie johnson is better. but he really is'nt jeff won 2 championships in a row too. he won 33 races in 3 years. It's takin jimmie 6 years to win 33 races. in six years jeff had well over 40 wins.

gordo has earned the championships by competing for the whole yr, not like johnson who finished well the last 10, with these new rules noone will ever be the real champ anymore anyway
