What will happen is that the doctor will do a procedure called a biopsy to determine whether or not it is cancerous. There are a few ways that a breast biopsy can be done:
1)A needle biopsy: The doctor may use a needle attached to a syringe to remove fluid or cells, but a special needle will be used to remove a piece of breast tissue. The needle is inserted (much like getting a shot), and tissue is removed before the needle is taken out.
2)An open biopsy: An open biopsy may remove either part or all of the area of the tumor. The doctor makes an incision (cut) in the breast and removes the breast tissue. Sometimes, testing is done for a preliminary diagnosis at the time of the procedure, but obtaining a final diagnosis requires more time.
Good luck!

next stage will be a biopsy, a sample of the cells have to be taken from the tumor to determine if the tumor is cancerous. Biopsies can be done in several ways, depending on the size and location of the tumor. There is a surgical biposy in which they make a incision into the breast and removes all of tumor or irregular tissue or just part of the lump or tissue.
A needle biopsy is less involved than a surgocal biopsy and normally done in the doctors office. They do numb the breast tissue. A needle is inserted into the tumor in the breast. Fine needl is inserted into the tumor in the breast to remove a sample of the cells and then there is the core biposy they use a larger needle to remove a piece of tissue. The biopsy tissue is sent to a pathologist whe examines it to determine if the cells are cancerous. If it is cancerous the pathologist will determine what type of breast cancer it is and its grade. If cancer cells are detected tests are preformed to determine the sage of your cancer.
The tissue that is removed is also tested for tumor markers. this means the proteins that may be on the surface or inside cancer cells. In breast cancers, tumors are tested for hormone receptors and HER2/neu. Depending on the status of the markers this can help predict how the cancer will respond to certain treatments. I went to a surgen for my core biopsy, she used a ultrasound while removing tissue from the tumor. Hope you mom just has a sist, I will say a prayer for her and the family. Good Luck! and God Bless!

Her doctor would most likely do a biopsy, which could be done in the office sometimes, or her doctor may send her to a lab where you would get blood work done. They send the biopsy out to be tested, and if it is cancerous then treatment options would be discussed, such as chemo or surgery. If not cancerous, the doctor still may want to remove the tumor. But keep your head up and be strong. I know how scary that is to find out, but they are many treatments for breast cancerous now adays. There have been long strides made to in breast cancerous research and treatment . Early detection is a huge thing! Try not to worry until you have all the facts. It won't do you or your mom any good. Instead try to cherish each day and be thankful. You and your family will be in my prayers. (this one hits home for me)

Surgeon will remove it, then they determine if it's cancer. If cancer, then she will see an oncologist (Dr. who specializes in cancer), who will map out a treatment plan.
