When the receiver benefits in some way. When it is done with positive attitude and without expecting anything in return. Most likely the experience will make the volunteer feel good and that is a positive experience.

a positive volunteer experience can best be described as:
volunteering for something that you find interesting
giving 100%
walking away feeling like you made a difference to at least 1 person
not expecting anything in return and being suprised when you walk away with a really good feeling inside and not having to tell the whole world you volunteered
