Playstation 3 avatar?

can I choose an avatar other than the listed on PS3 to in my profile
like chose from my pic?
if yes how then?

Yes, you can have your own picture as your Avatar for your profile.

First, go to the Users Tab on the PS3's XMB and press triangle. After pressing triangle, go down to Information and press X. Then press X when the picture avatar is highlighted to choose your own picture.
