No person in their right mind would consider it anything but love if I were to discipline my daughter for running into a crowded street!! Sometimes discipline is to help us avoid DEATH!!

Look at the grace of God for instance. The grace of God is compassion. As long as your looking to God for answers. As long as your pride doesn't block you from hearing God. As long as you are repentant when committing sin habits. Then you fall in God grace.
As soon as you go against God will,.. you fall out of the grace of God. Thus God won't enable you. You learn humility through failing. Thus you become teachable, and more compassionate.
The old covenant was the law. The new covenant is the Holy Spirit. Yet, not a single word of the old covenant has changed. It's just been brought into a new light. But as followers of the law,.. the sternness of a father was necessary.

Paul explains it when he says that whom Jehovah loves he disciplines. They were warned time and again of what would happen if they continued in their wrong course. They refused to listen and suffered the consequences time and again. And remember, God did not actually DO anything to them. His punishment was to withdraw his protection from them and let them fend for themselves.
