I've heard of doing a signature platter before, but I've not known of anyone to actually do it. I don't know that it would make a great heirloom because, like said earlier, guests are special only to that particular couple. But some might find it sentimental. A great idea, I think, is having guests sign a big picture frame. It's a great way to commemorate who was at the event and is easily displayed in one's home.

They don't get handed down. Nobody knows these people but you so it's not "special" for them. Just a platter.
Actually most brides I've seen do it end up dissapointed. Using the engraving tools isn't as easy as the packages make it appear to be. It takes practice. Guests don't have that practice so their signatures either end up looking like a 4 year old, completely unreadale, and nobody can do cursive so its all stick letters. In many cases after seeing the results of others guests just decide not to mess with it.
Consider a photo mat instead.

We had one, it turned out really cute. We did not have a book- I think one thing for people to sign is enough. Hopefully our kids will be interested in it someday!
Bought it at David's- it was an impulse purchase that worked out really well! It was NOT the engravable platter, but a ceramic plate that you write on with a pen. After the wedding, you bake it and the writing becomes permanent.

Honestly if a relative handed a platter like that down to me, I would be less than thrilled. Your wedding and the guests there are special to only you.
I like the wish-types better because you can read specific wishes & stories that people write about the couple.

Not sure about passing it down but I think that it would be a great thing to have. It's something that you might actually have on display in your home vs. the book that will stay closed up and in a pretty little box in the attic somewhere...sorry..I digress... that's my guest book...LOL.

I am thinking about one of these too. I didn't think to pass it from generation to generation, but I thought it would be a nice decor to our new home and life together.
