Dear friend,
I started English when I was 12 and that is 56 years ago and I think I am pretty good.I also learned some other languages.I use Spanish every day.Last weekend we had visitors from El Salvador. The man,70, wants to learn English.I advised him to get a picture word book. Also children's books are very good.Try it.It works and it is cheap.

Depends on your own style of learning, and on your present level. If you are learning on your own, you need a good dictionary (Collins Co-build Dictionary is good for learners at intermediate level upwards) and you might find it useful to buy a good grammar practice book, such as 'How English Works' by Michael Swan and Catherine Walter.

Surf the net, looking at English sites. Note any vocabulary that interests you. Get English language films on DVD and watch them with the English subtitles. Learn the words of English language songs that you like. Buy magazines about things you enjoy and read articles that interest you.

To improve your vocabulary (vocab is more important in spoken language than grammar - without grammar, you can't express much, but without vocab you can't express ANYTHING) note words you think are important and every so often, test yourself. If you can, have a look at the series 'Test Your Vocabulary' by Michael McCarthy. Maybe you can borrow it from a library.

Good luck
