in today's military, lets get an understanding first, the pentagon took advantage of the law that president nixon stopping the draft and marked it up even higher and to a status of breaking the law about discrimination. this can mean any old reason that any branch can dream up and yes, they realize the economy sucks and so do most of the jobs and thats why they make it even more dificult to get accepted

Another thing not mentioned is being party to a group that advocates the violent overthrow of the government. Also being part of an organized criminal gang and or racist organization.
