The aquaducts have stood the test of time. How can you possibly consider that an act of incompetence? Engineers now-a-days are lucky if their structures last 100 years, the aquaducts have been around for more than 2000 years.

Plus, how else were the Romans supposed to bring fresh water to their huge empire. Did you forget that 2 millinea ago there were no such things as metal pipes?

If anything was a waste of public money and effort, it was the pyramids, not the aquaducts. The pyramids had no possitive impact on the egyptians, wheras the aquaducts provided life-sustaining water to the Romans.

First and foremost, I don't agree that any wastes on the public money or taxes are due to the incompetence of the engineer in-charge. As a civil engineer, we do design and construct the structure to the most economical but structurally safe and fits to the needs of the client as well suits to the purpose of the project. We do construct based on the standard plans and specifications as well as on the bill of quantities. The only thing that causes wastage or loss of public money is the interest of the corrupt politicians who ask "share or percentage" out of the project cost that sometimes may entail to project overpricing inorder to compensate that "percentage". These "crocodiles" are the one who truly wastes people's money.
