So many people say to give scented candles, I for one can't stand them! Scented candles are a thoughtless gift unless you know the person would want them. I don't like to go inside those stores that are full of scents, and I certainly don't want to put chemical aromas in my clean house. When I get a smelly candle or other 'fragrant' gift, I put it straight in the outside trash can. What a waste.

With so many scented products out there, you may be in the smaller percentage of people who like them but I agree it's difficult. I believe scents are personal and just like perfumes should not be given unless you know the person's tastes. I wind up throwing them away or re-gifting them as well but most people know I don't use scented products.

Just goes to show that people like you and me are what make the world go 'round. In a way, you're right. I personally really enjoy scents in my home but not scented candles. I prefer tarts and oils. And I only like certain ones. People have bought me candles like canteloupe, jazmine etc....and they're gross. For this time of year, I really like the nutmeg oils and chocolate tarts. As far as a more thoughtful gift, I find that unless you gift something that can't be regifted, try to get out of gifting. Something like a cup with kids pictures, a book with a kind, personal notation inside etc....These things can't be regifted to anybody else. Just a pet peeve of mine.

It's only a waste to people like you who don't like them. I personally love them and have received many as gifts. Instead of throwing away a gift that someone was considerate enough to buy you, why don't you give those "smelly candles" to someone who does like them, or give them to Goodwill? Or better yet, tell all the people who have given you those nasty candles that you really don't want them, and they have basically wasted their money buying them for you because rather than tell them you don't like scented candles, you were rude and threw them away. You ask about scented candles in the etiquette section and then admit to commiting the biggest flaw in etiquette I can think of.
I personally think it is not only rude, but disprespectful to take a gift that someone gave you and throw it away, unused. I would be very hurt if someone did that with a gift I gave them.

If you get so many of them you should save them and give them to other people who have given you scented candles. Free hostess gifts! Just remember who gave you which one. You can put them in plastic bags if you don't want them stinking up your house.

I personally like them, but I haven't given them as a gift. I'll remember you and stick with the wine when I bring a gift.

save the planet, recycle. I only like the high quality ones such as diptyque, the low cost ones do smell very chemical. Upper end range candles are not made with as many chemicals, usually use distilled aromas of rose, fig etc., so not as harsh and I find they create a very pleasnat aoma in the home, a feeling of warmth and a pleasant atmosphere.

You're obviously not the stereotypical woman. Most of us like things that smell nice (candles, expensive perfume, etc.) What does your home smell like--some type of hospital disinfectant??

If you don't want the candles, give them to Salvation Army or Goodwill. They'll make a great find (esp. since they're new) for some lucky normal woman.

those candles are expensive as someone else said it is rude to not have someone enjoy them, re gift them or even sell the on eBay so you can get some enjoyment which is what the gift was intended for

why throw them away? you should re-gift them. regifting is like getting a gift that you dont like and giving it to someone that likes/loves that sort of gift.

regifting is a better option rather than throwing things away.
have fun regifting =D
