SInce whippets are ALL ABOUT the chase instinct (prey drive) they need a fenced yard or to only be walked on lead- they can take off after a squirrel, deer or blowing scrap of paper and be never seen again (they won't even hear you call)
Thin skin and lack of much hair means they need to be house dogs and can lead to some vet bills. They are not a no shed breed but it's a conastant trickle not something that means you rake your rug.
Generally they are calm & polite in the house but see no reason to walk around things and will valt over the coffe table, couch ect. and are horrible counter crusers (I have a latch on my oven door, fridge, a complicated lock on the dog food can...)
They snuggle very well but are not going to learn to stay off furniture or beds easily. (few owners try)
AH Jeeez since there is no pro whippet racing in the Americas I doubt your friend rescued whippets off the ractrack - greyhounds maybe or whippets out of someones house.....whippet rescue seldom has 10 dogs at a time nationwide

I had a close friend who had whippets- she'd save them from the racetrack down in Tijuana and I understood them to be great dogs. Grateful, easily trained and good house dogs too.

Hey answer number one-- the asker is asking for opinions, so don't act like a twit with your smart a** answers. No one likes a turd.

Edit: Yes, it was a WHIPPET and NOT a greyhound. In Mexico, they race anything, including whippets. Legal or illegal, that's what it was. Take a trip down to lovely downtown Tijuana and see for YOURSELF.
