i am looking for a compression tool that would be able to compress from gigabyte to megabyte if possible it must have a file change feature so that i can change file types,if not then the compression feature would be fine. i know that they are tools that can do this but my search was in vain if any one know of a tool that i can download for free plz let me know about it thanks for your input.

Any compression much beyond what zip can do is losing information... you can't compress words much beyond 2:1... if you want 1000:1 compression, you're going to lose most of the information unless you're mostly dealing with very 'all the same' stuff.
There is nothing much better than winzip / gzip / bzip / pkzip that doesn't lose information. If tere were, everyone would use it and never buy a new hard disk.

You might have to look for lossy compression if you need drastic compression. eg look for tools employing huffmans algo.
