Most mainstream religions tend to be biased towards one another and many western religions, christianity, islam regard mayan, or aztec or any other religions as myth, as if theirs is'nt wrapped up in myth as well, its all in who has the bigger stick really, you beat the weaker one to submission and he has no choice but to submit to your ideas or beliefs (so many cultures and history has been destroyed because of this,, to indoctrinate a culture to their belief system, hence destroying the rich history of a people, as well as their language and way of life) I'm skeptical of the Jesus story (not if he existed) but same with moses and abraham, definately the account of the The Flood and The parting of the Red Sea...I believe as do many other scholars, that most of the stories in the bible, especially in the Old Testament are rehashes of a much ancient text. Just wanted to know, what are your thoughts on this and do you agree/disagree and why?

Thank you everyone

STRAIGHT - you'd do well to re-read the question as I believe you may have answered, perhaps, someone else's question and it accidentally landed here, being as it's completely unrelated. Thanks

What if your premise is backwards? What if the reason there is so much overlap between the various myths of different ancient peoples and cultures throughout the world is because they have all captured at least part of the truth--which we can now see more completely because we have more pieces of the puzzle? Did you know that the Great Flood story is pretty much universal? Don't you think this could be evidence that it DID happen rather than that everybody made it up separately?

Jesus said "I am THE Way, THE Truth, THE Life. No man cometh to the Father but by Me." That's good enough for me.

I will believe Him, believe His Word, and take what I don't understand or am able to prove on faith.

This is the delima of man. Do I believe or not believe?
To everything there is a time and a purpose as the scripture tells us. There isn't any magic word I can give you to change your mind. This is the power of God. It doesn't over whelm a person and leaves in tact the ego. God just wants people to believe in him. He is a Spirit and no man can see him. He wants everyone to choose him by our own free will. That is the reason for all of this and for all the other choices that are false and from the liar, Satan. Because if you can get through all the false religions and all the lies that turn us away from faith, then it really is your free will that you choose Jesus Christ. If you don't choose him that is your choice also.
So when you face the one true and real God, Jesus Christ, you know that it was your choice not to believe.

As long as you look at all religions as the same, you will never rise above the confusion. If you are a scholar, it should not take you long to devise a plan that would allow you to test the major religions. In a short period of time you should be able to find at least two that at least have some possibility of having some acceptable evidence. In less than 5 years, you should be able to know for sure.

I do agree with you that the bibilical stories are nothign more than a retelling of other stories. There are too many similarities of teh bible and other religious stories. The flood was done by the greeks as well. Zeus flooded the earth, and only one family was spared. And if you read the Book of the Dead, some of the reverse confessions are the same as the ten commandments.

The more research I do, the more convinced I become that you are right. Many stories in the Bible are simply ancient myths and legends that have been dusted off a bit. The story of the virgin mother and the immaculately conceived son of God is not new to Christianity. It can be found in ancient Egypt in the form of Osiris (being God in this case) and Isis (being the virgin mother) giving birth to Horus, who also happened to be born on the 25th of December. Going farther back, we find the same myth in ancient Babylon, where we find Nimrod, Sumerimus (sp?), and the son Tamos, also born of an immaculate conception and also born on December 25th.

I haven't dug into the other stories in the bible too deeply as of yet, but I do know that there are myths around the world which reference a flood and over a dozen religions around the world which refer to their saviour having been crucified. To me, it all points to something not being quite right in the Bible.

My brain agrees that many of the stories found in the Tanakh probably came from much older cultures. However, as a Jew, my heart has a difficult time recognizing that. Does that make any sense?

Definitely, all religions bear the undeniable mark of human craftsmanship, which is why I look for evidence to support claims. Granted faith seems to dictate believe without proof, but any physical action (miracle) in this world would leave evidence and/or be noticed by other cultures.

i will tell you my view as being a muslim.......quran (holy book of islam) also mentions stories from past...but i don't know why people don't understand that why can't a religious book mentions history as a lesson for the reader????

not all stories are false... If a believer believes in Quran,, then he believes in it thouroughly,,,, God has the power over all things,, if he wanted to part the sea and save his messenger,, then its His will , and He can do very well.......

People have been trying to prove the Bible false for years.

Many of them became Christians when they realize the Bible was true.

Only recently the army of pharoh was found under water under the Red Sea.

So everything in the Bible is really true.

On the other hand, Professors at BYU have been busy lately proving that their own book is false.

The tried to prove the Book of Mormon was true using DNA but their tests proved the Book of Mormon is false.

Proving that the Mormon or LDS religion is a lie.

Where as the Bible is being proven more and more true as time goes on.

I couldn't agree more! Many of the old testament stories that many christian believe without question, such as the creation story, are in fact echoes, or in some cases copies, of much older stories from religions that they consider as nothing more than myths and superstitions. Funny that, eh?
