This has to be the ultimate sacrifice, maybe a gamble that by making such an extreeme offer the world would change. I think it is an illustration for people to remember that the ultimate purity is to live a sinless life and Jesus was the example. It is a reinforcement of I am the way, I am the light. It also started a slow and long revolution which for many nations became the an influence of governance which perhaps has been diluted by world changes.

God set all the rules. It was God's rule. It took a blood sacrifice for the remission of sins. Animals only covered the sin. Jesus being unblemished took away the sins.
