I heard the offical butterball spokesperson say this on the radio yesterday. Take the amount of people you want, and then expect to give them each a pound and a half of turkey. This way, you will have some leftovers, but be able to feed everyone. So that would make a 9 lb turkey for 6 people I believe.

The official rule of thumb from my culinary arts class is two pounds per person (that doesn't mean everyone will eat two pounds of turkey though -- you have to bear in mind that part of that weight is the bones). So if you use that rule, you'd need a 12-lb. turkey. My personal rule is it's always better to have too much than not enough, so I would get a 14-lb. turkey for six people, just in case. We're having six people for Thanksgiving and my wife and I LOVE leftovers, so we got a 20-lb. turkey.

I think the smallest turkey you can get is about 12 lbs, so I'd stick with that. You might also want to consider getting a whole turkey breast instead of a whole turkey. Brine it for a few hours in a brown sugar/ salt/ water mixture and then place butter mixed with chopped fresh sage and thyme between the skin and meat. Bake in oven until meat thermometer registers 165 degrees. Baste with a mixture of butter, lemon juice, garlic to obtain that lovely skin we all love!

You'll want about 1.5 pounds per person. So I would do at least a 12 pounder just to be on the safe side. To give you an idea, I just cooked a 21 pounder for 13 people and had a ton of leftovers.

I say a 7-10 lb turkey. That will give each person about 1 lb of meat a piece, and you will have leftovers for later. Of course, if you have pre-teens or large adults at the table, you may want to allow about 1/2 lb additional for them.

12 lbs. ought to be enough for 6 and leftovers. The bigger the bird, the longer it has to cook. Think about it; 6 people, 12 lb bird; that's 2 lbs. per person! Don't you think that is enough?

your supposed to figure 1lb of meat per person. the totaly wieght of the bird will have bones, so 6 ppl means 6lb bird. But then if you will want left overs add .5 lbs per person.
