There are many reasons why our bodies may retain fluid/water. Most are very serious & should be addressed by one's health care practitioner but the legs swell due in part to gravity. The fluid enters the circulation creating a larger than normal blood volume which takes the retained fluid along with it into our legs where it gets stuck because it's fighting gravity uphill & because the large volume of fluid stretches the blood vessels - veins - causing the fluid to ooze out into the surrounding tissue where it becomes trapped & difficult to remove. Sitting & lying down with the feet elevated helps but finding & treating the cause of the water retention is best.

Hello,
The water kind of fills up the pores within the skin, or to say the same thing in different words, the skin gets soggy. There's too much water in the body, and the excess gravitates to the feet.
Sometimes the heart gets a bit behind with its pumping, and blood-fluid that should be circulated, gets left un-pumped in the system of veins. In this case, as well as getting ankle swelling on both sides, the person also gets some sogginess of the liver and swollen veins in the neck. This needs medical treatment.
Hope this is of some help. Belliger (retired UK GP)

?Bad circulation. Sit with your legs up on a chair for a bit, see if that helps. Otherwise see your gp. You might have fluid retention.
